ikumi National Park is actually part of the Mikumi-Selous ecosystem making it the largest ecosystem in the whole of Africa.
Only a small part in the north of the park is really accessible for game drives while the south is wild and almost unexplored. That region is similar to the Serengeti, being mainly flat, open grassland with the occasional baobab and borassus palm tree and patches of acacia woodland. This makes the park ideal for game viewing.
Size and situation: Size: 3,230 sq km.
Situated north of Selous, some 290km from Dar es Salaam, the fourth-largest park in Tanzania, is the Tanzanian economic capital closest park.
Landscapes: It is surrounded by mounts ULUGURU and RUBEHO which not only supply its water with their numerous cascades but also lend a magnificent back drop to its scenery.
Mikumi National Park is part of a much larger ecosystem centered on the uniquely vast Selous Game Reserve.
Wildlife: The Park is densely populated by its wildlife. It is inhabited by elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, buffalos, hippo, wildebeest, zebras, warthogs, jackals, yellow baboons and many more to name but a few.
With a bit of luck, you might spot three of its rarest species: the sable antelope, great kudu, and the wild dogs.
The Mikumi National Park is also the nest of over 400 different species of birds
Activities: 4wd game drives.
Climate: Mikumi National Parks dry season starts around
the mid of May lasting to the mid-November with patches of transition time
between January and February when rains switch from the short to the longs
rains.
Long rains start from around the middle of March tapering off by the end of
May.
